ICS Consulting

ICS (Initiative for Compliance and Sustainability) is an ethical audit platform launched in 1998 by the French retail group Auchan that today unites more than 60 European retail groups including Carrefour, Casino, Decathlon, Lidl France and Monoprix. It is used in particular by retail chains based in France, Italy and Spain. Every ICS member company requires its suppliers to share their audit results, and the data can be accessed collectively by all members through the ICS platform.

The Two ICS Modules

  • ICS Social: Focuses on workers' rights, occupational health and safety, and ethics. Its scope is comparable to the SMETA 4-Pillar.
  • ICS Environment: Focuses on environmental management, waste, chemicals and energy. It is usually implemented together with the Social module.

ICS Scoring

Each audit results in a score at the level of A (Excellent), B (Good), C (Acceptable), D (Insufficient) or E (Critical). Member brands require their suppliers to reach at least a defined minimum level. For D and E scores, improvement plans of 6 to 12 months are requested.

ICS Process Flow

  • Customer request: An ICS member brand requires its supplier to undergo an ICS audit.
  • Selection of an accredited audit body: An audit body is chosen from among the ICS-accredited firms (such as Bureau Veritas, SGS, Intertek and TÜV).
  • Pre-audit preparation: Policies, procedures, records and training infrastructure.
  • On-site audit: A 1-2 day facility visit, worker interviews and document review.
  • Findings report: Score plus list of non-conformities.
  • Improvement plan: Preparation of a CAP (Corrective Action Plan).
  • Follow-up audit (if needed): Renewal within 6-12 months for a D/E score.

ICS is especially critical for French retail groups. If you work with Carrefour, Casino or Decathlon, an ICS audit is a contractual requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How many years is my ICS score valid?

The typical validity period is 24 months for an A/B score, 18 months for C, and between 6 and 12 months for D/E.

  2. Does the same audit count for both ICS and SMETA?

Generally no. Each system has its own audit protocol. However, in some cases a shared preparation infrastructure makes both audits more efficient.

  3. In which cases is the ICS Environment module required?

The ICS Environment module may be requested in sectors with high water, energy or chemical use (textiles, chemicals, leather).
